What is Live Karaoke?

It's like regular karaoke, but with live instruments.  You can sing along sing lead, or take an instrument (even one we're already playing!).  There are ~200 songs across different decades and genres to sing, and we're also up for experimenting with style (like, "What if Dreams from Fleetwood Mac was a funk song?").

What's all this signup business?

The signups and setlists are part of bringing a bit more structure and predictability to the process, and avoiding those awkward "what song do we play next?" moments.  There is a house band (Sound Body) and a general plan of songs that we'll play absent other requests.  You can sign up to play or sing on a song we're already doing, or choose one from the (somewhat abridged) karaoke books.  Each set also will start on the hour, and we'll use the time in between to look at song and collaboration requests, and rework the coming set accordingly.

That sounds really complicated.  Can I just join a song?

Absolutely!  As with all music matters, everyone is encouraged to join on or off-stage in whatever capacity they're comfortable with, from rocking out a lead solo to enthusiastically shaking a piece of fruit in the background.  No permission necessary; at Music Matters you are always invited to participate.

The advantage to signing up is that we'll wait for and coordinate with you.  This can be helpful if you want to lead a song.

What if I just want to play my own stuff?

Artists are welcome to perform their own work during set breaks, though general participation rules still apply (ie: everyone is invited).
